This volunteership is a great opportunity to gain experience in several different fields and get an insight into the world of NGOs first-hand. Interning with us in community-based centres will allow you to work in environmental awareness, English teaching, women’s empowerment and youth development. However, in case you bring specific knowledge of one program with you or should you have to focus on a specific field because of your studies, there is still the opportunity to specialize in one area or another.

This position includes tasks such as:

-Thorough introduction to the organization.
-Certified Training in First Aid and Child Safeguarding.
-Planning and implementing workshops on topics such as environmental awareness raising, English language skills, women’s empowerment, health and wellbeing.
-Supervising or teaching skateboarding, sports, crafts and games to the children.
-Giving homework support and small group tutoring.
-Bringing new ideas about how to improve the program and space.
-Attending weekly meetings with your fellow volunteers and coordinator to plan the upcoming activities.

-In-house training introducing you to the world of humanitarianism and NGOs - pertaining to a wide range of basic skills such as the creation and implementation of a project plan, including Needs Assessment, Log Frames and GANTT charts
-Organized activities & trips (barbeques, game nights, volunteer-lunch, team building trips) with like-minded people from all over the world
-Working in a friendly beach & surf town right next to many historical sites
-The satisfying feeling of committing your work to a good cause whilst gaining insight into a new culture
-Formal internship reference letter for future employment
-Ability to say you completed a formal internship with Otra Cosa Network on your CV

The reason why we ask for a financial contribution from all of our volunteers and interns is because we aim to provide all of our projects for free to the local communities. These financial contributions make up a large part of our income to cover our operating costs. You can look at the contribution rates here http://otracosa.org/volunteer/contribution/. We believe our rates are pretty fair compared to rates other organizations in South America ask for. We also hold transparency extremely important so you can see where our contributions go in our Annual Reports. We will have 2019's report up soon. I know it seems kind of unfair to ask for a financial contribution when you offer your work for free but a lot of the contribution goes to the support system we offer such as airport pickups, weekly lunches, and fun weekend trips.

We also anticipate the procurement of a solar water pump/pipes for irrigation purposes during water stress conditions (drought).
Through the Extra curricula and/after school program activity designed and applied, the campaign on Climate Justice and Food sovereignty/security shall be boosted.

All the Farm activities at the Hub also go towards conserving the environment, feeding visitors/volunteers and sustaining the.program/project

This project is also geared towards building the programme intervention "Environmental Education Hub"

The volunteer (s) is encouraged to operate like were working at home away from home.

We have also secured land along the lake shores of semere in Kapir-Kapir village and; Omiito-Omiito village that houses the Underground water well. We plan to run irrigation plants in both village sites.

This program shall also be sustained by volunteer participation fees through this humanitarian tourism intervention.

In addition, It is okay if the volunteer (s) decided to carry along small donations like games & sports equipment etc to boost the school extra-curricular and after-school activity coupled with recreation activities for the out of school.

Conservation & Agro-Ecology Project

Yields vs Output:

Output (which the project popularises) means you have a variety of foods, you are looking after the soil, water retention, biodiversity and so on. It's a win-win situation and central to land-use, agro-diversity and so on.

Productivism is an.obsession, which compels farmers to exploit all their resources, soil and so on. The word exploit is apt because it undermines and degrades all resources and labour, which is not sustainable in the long-run.

Vandana Shiva teaches us that ecology in agro is the way to go; output instead of yield is better for everyone, including the soil. Vandana Shiva was also referring to nutrition, cultural factors like appropriate cuisine, food sovereignty and so on.

Social Worker Duties - Roles and Responsibilities

- Create awareness on environmental issues. Increase people's awareness about the environment and associated challenges;

- Promote conservation & sustainability;

- Explore environmental issues;

- Engage in problem solving and take action to improve the environment. Develop a deep understanding of environmental issues and have the skills to make informed and responsible decisions. Recycling of post-consumer plastic waste to manufacture building materials (plastic lumber, roofing tiles and pavements)

We use post-consumer plastic waste as a resource to manufacture eco-friendly plastic lumber. The plastic lumber is an affordable alternative to timber, which reduces the need for building material manufactured from wood, helping to preserve forests and cut down on deforestation and effects of climate change. Plastic lumber made from recycled plastics are ideal for fencing on farms, homes, national parks, forest reserves and commercial places. Our solution creates economic value on plastic at the points of generation to enable the households/farms/companies to sort and sell plastics in order to earn income. It worth noting we are creating wealth from waste and with the uprising levels of environmental degradation our solution will generate employment for individuals at the initial stages of the value chain, mostly youth and women, who collect, sort and clean plastic waste for reselling. We aim at training 50 youths on this methodology and empower 200 kids on the need to beat plastic pollution

The project has already been able to procure 5 acres of land towards this cause.

We need to make the "Environmental Education Hub" habitable by volunteers visiting for purposes of carrying out among others activities on Education, Research and Rural Development in Kapir, Eastern Uganda.

Climate Justice remains a cross cutting issue. As a matter of principle, climate change is a global challenge affecting the entire
world and humanity as a whole. Apart from that, scientists predict increasingly severe consequences of climate change for generations yet
to come. The concept of climate justice addresses this unequal
allocation of benefits and burdens by relating climate change to
matters of social justice and human rights. We consider climate justice as an inevitable brick in building a sustainable future and creating a just and fair society.
By taking active steps against climate change and demonstrating
solidarity with most vulnerable population groups and peoples, we
assume our responsibility in the global sustainability challenge and seek to do our part in attaining climate justice.
Together with local communities, volunteers shall work on grassroots
projects that combine manual work and awareness raising actions. These address issues such as: climate change, carbon offset, environmental sustainability, protection of responsibility in the global sustainability challenge and seek to do our part in attaining climate justice. (CCIVS)

This project aims to prepare for the arrivarl of visitors at the "Environmental Education Hub" by raising funds ($2000) to build furnished shelter for the volunteers/visitors.

The work of the on-line volunteer would be to mobilise 20 well-wishers (individuals or teams) that can each donate atleast $100 towards this cause.

Altogether, we are developing an "Environmental Education Hub" Project - Where we promote climate/environment friendly solutions, a responsibility for everyone for the benefit of generations to come. Climate Responsive Water & Sanitation Project

In addition to providing sanitation services, the Bio Latrine/toilet is also expected to give light as security at the "Environmental Education Hub" where the volunteers (visitors) are expected to camp during the term of community service etc as a way.of identitying with the community.

$2000 shall also facilitate the cleaning/treatment of water in the already dug underground water well coupled with protection of the source/well using a slab. The well would be a source of water for irrigation and domestic use among others.
We aim to also procure a solar water pump and pipe to facilitate upcoming irrigation efforts.
