Output (which the project popularises) means you have a variety of foods, you are looking after the soil, water retention, biodiversity and so on. It's a win-win situation and central to land-use, agro-diversity and so on.
Productivism is an.obsession, which compels farmers to exploit all their resources, soil and so on. The word exploit is apt because it undermines and degrades all resources and labour, which is not sustainable in the long-run.
Vandana Shiva teaches us that ecology in agro is the way to go; output instead of yield is better for everyone, including the soil. Vandana Shiva was also referring to nutrition, cultural factors like appropriate cuisine, food sovereignty and so on.
Light and Hope Initiative is a non-governmental charity working to benefit the most vulnerable community members in the informal settlements in Kenya through our integrated programs such as:
1. Education
We partner with individuals, churches and organizations to support the vulnerable children in Mathare slums through child sponsorship program and paying for their school fees, two meals each day, school uniforms, and their medication. We regularly do intentional visits to their homes to follow up on their progress guided by our child protection policy (CPP) to ensure the children are always safe. We also nurture and develop the talents in our children.
2. Empowerment
Through our empowerment programs, we create jobs and a reliable income for parents of our students and other community members who have little to no formal education. We show thousands of people from impoverished backgrounds that they are resource-rich in ability, determination, ingenuity, and motivation.
3. Restoration
Being whole means being healthy. We carry out Health initiatives, advanced physical, mental, emotional, relational and spiritual health support programs in the community.
Within neighborhoods, community development starts with relationships. Through our community engagement program, we engage and equip one community member to equip and mobilize others. We help communities identify their needs, evaluate their God-given resources and find solutions on improving their lives. For example, community gardens, clean-up days, or construction of public restrooms.
Through Education, Mentorship and Empowerment we set these families on improved trajectories and break the inter-generational cycle of poverty that has long existed here in Mathare slums.
We work with vulnerable single mothers in the informal settlements by offering skills training to them and once they finish we help them start up their own businesses using the skills acquired.
We are always on the look out for volunteers with different skills such as woodwork, Beauty, embroidery e.t.c. to help pass these skills to the women in our network so as to set them on improve trajectory and help break the inter-generational cycle of poverty that has long existed here in the slums of Mathare.

Organizational Context & Project Description:
United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) assistance to Vietnam began in the late 1970s. Within low middle-income country context, its Ninth Country Programme (CP9) for the period 2017-2021 is aligned with the objectives of the National Socio-Economic Development Plan 2016-2020 and the National Population and Reproductive Health Strategy (2011-2020), the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and other normative frameworks that the Government has committed to. The programme aims at achieving universal access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH), particularly for young people,
addressing gender-based violence and harmful practices, strengthening data generation and analysis capacity, and evidence-based policy advocacy. Particularly, it addresses inequalities and emerging vulnerabilities, and ensures application of a human rights-based approach throughout the programme cycle.
Project Description:
Within the CP9, UNFPA supports the Ministry of Health (MOH) to develop appropriate evidence- and human rights based policies and guidelines to achieve universal access to HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccination amongst adolescent girls (to prevent cervical cancer) and modern contraceptives for young migrant workers. Key programme areas are: (ii) generating evidence (research); (ii) policy advocacy; (iii) policy development and (iv) service delivery (based on availability of the mobilized resources).
