Misión México is situated in Tapachula, Chiapas, México, and is a registered charity in México and the UK, which partners with an approved Australian NGO.
Полное описание
Misión México provides a loving, secure home for children and young adults of all ages who have been abused, neglected, orphaned or abandoned. Children and young adults are referred to us by the Government Welfare Department and we provide a loving and stable home for them for as long as they need it. The number of children and young adults in our care changes constantly, but on average we care for between 30 and 40 children on a permanent basis. Almost all of the children and young adults have suffered extreme poverty and abuse. Some have experienced unspeakable violence. Since it was established in 2001, Misión México has helped transform the lives of more than 250 children, giving them a much deserved second chance at life. All are regaining a sense of confidence and self respect having found Misión México. The refuge resembles a family home rather than an institution, where the children feel loved and secure. The children attend school, which some of them have not experienced before. They also have access to tutors to help with their studies, and access to education psychologists and therapists. The children are also learning to swim and surf and are the only surfers in Tapachula! Surfing is a previously unknown activity in the area, yet it has become a uniquely transforming sporting activity for these children. Our surfing programme is being introduced to enable the kids to find confidence in themselves and a belief that they can achieve anything they want.

Volunteers are needed all year round at Misión México and people from all over the world come to donate their time to us. We consider a volunteer to be a ‘friend with authority’ here at Misión México. The children need love and fun but also guidance and discipline. Please note that we require a minimum 8 week commitment and that volunteers must be over the age of 21. Every volunteer has some talent that they can share. You don’t need to be an engineer or a certified child psychologist. A genuine love for children and an enthusiasm to work is a basic requirement.

Дополнительная информация
Living at Misión México is an intense but wonderful time for volunteers. We cover every day from 5.30am until 9.30pm (split into no more than eight hour shifts) and are responsible for helping with the daily running of the refuge - such as wake-up, chore supervision, homework, meal supervision, getting ready for school, bed-time and other activities like sport, art and craft or whatever skill you want to bring to the house. We need people who are loving but can also discipline the children. These children come to us from a history of abuse, neglect and poverty. Part of their education with us is not only going to school, but also learning how to be respectful, look after their things and learn to live with others as a family. It is important to stress that this isn't a holiday but a busy work time for volunteers, but it is so rewarding and you will walk away from here with so much love for the children. Volunteers will have at least one full day off every week to rest.

COVID-19 UPDATE During the current period of uncertainty in the world, and restrictions on travel, we are taking additional measures to ensure that all our children and staff remain safe and unexposed to COVID-19. We are therefore asking any new volunteers to self quarantine for 14 days once they arrive in Tapachula, and before they come into contact with our children and staff. This would be at your own cost, and we are unable to provide accommodation for this 14 day period. We are able to help negotiate Airbnb rates for you locally. It is a requirement that all volunteers undergo and submit police clearance checks prior to commencing volunteer placement. You'll need to arrange with your local authorities to obtain the check and then forward the document to this email address.
Mision Mexico provides all volunteers with onsite accommodation which includes either a private or shared bedroom, a shared kitchen, a shared bathroom, and a common room/hangout area. Free wifi is provided, as well as one meal each day. My primary role as a volunteer has been to assist the Mision Mexico staff in the running of the house. This means helping the children maintain their daily routines - getting ready for school, meals, extra curricular activities, homework, free time, and chores. A thorough introduction to this role is provided by the Volunteer Coordinator, with numerous training shifts to assist with your transition into the position. My recommendation to anyone thinking of volunteering with this organisation would be to spend as much time as you possibly can, eight weeks is not enough, these children will capture your hearts. If you are thinking of volunteering in Mexico, or with children in general, this is the place to do it!!
