-Personal stress management is important when working in the field. Consider how you handle yourself in stressful situations and if this could impact how you work with students.
-Due to a variety of unpredictable factors, you will likely feel uncomfortable at some point in time – whether it’s due to food, conditions, accommodation, time, or cultural differences.
-The volunteer’s workload is demanding and it may require long hours.

Conditions

We offer this project:

Cultural HOUSE: To study English in Colombia is something that not everybody can afford. Academies are really expensive and not always offer the best quality. So we created a cultural house where people can come and learn English at a low cost. We also visit locals schools to give them support in the English classes. For this project, we offer accommodation and a kind of wage of 850.000 COP. It is important the person gets committed at least for 6months.

Volunteer in Sri Lankan Village with Horizon Lanka Foundation

Sri Lanka Teaching

Horizon Lanka Foundation is a non-profit organization (registered as a Guarantee Limited Company) located in Mahawilachchiya, the rural outskirts of Anuradhapura, the most ancient city of Sri Lanka. It runs academic programs for students in rural villages in Sri Lanka. The student body is made up primarily of local children who come to Horizon Academies after public school, during weekends and public school vacations. The Academies teach English, Information and Communication Technology, science, mathematics, fine arts, and sports to the children. We also train the children in skills such as presentation, public speaking and personal development. In addition to these subjects, students learn much more. Thanks to our dedicated staff and the hard work of local and foreign volunteers, the students also learn important life skills such as interpersonal communication, intercultural communication, tolerance, leadership, caring for others and the environment, sustainable development and teamwork.

The Horizon Lanka Foundation is a pillar in the local communities and works with them to improve the lives of all involved. We do this by assigning our local and foreign volunteers to assist the local public schools during morning sessions as Horizon Academies do not open during mornings except for school holidays and long public school vacations. Our ultimate goal is to empower rural youth so that they may work towards improving the conditions of their community as well as the surrounding communities.

The reason why we ask for a financial contribution from all of our volunteers and interns is because we aim to provide all of our projects for free to the local communities. These financial contributions make up a large part of our income to cover our operating costs. You can look at the contribution rates here http://otracosa.org/volunteer/contribution/. We believe our rates are pretty fair compared to rates other organizations in South America ask for. We also hold transparency extremely important so you can see where our contributions go in our Annual Reports. We will have 2019's report up soon. I know it seems kind of unfair to ask for a financial contribution when you offer your work for free but a lot of the contribution goes to the support system we offer such as airport pickups, weekly lunches, and fun weekend trips.

HELP/SUPPORT SUSTAINABLE EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT TO OUR

Arusha, Tanzania Teaching

We believe that a child’s future success and advancement in life is greatly influenced by their early educational experience as those who have go to school early develop an interest in education more than those who have not participated in early learning education – learning how to get along in groups, work under teacher supervision, etc. They also receive encouragement to express their feelings and ideas through building, dancing, and drawing, playing, singing and speaking. And thus, at the end of their pre-school years, they have become more competent pupils and will be more advanced in some of their abilities and be ready to master their new environment in primary and secondary education. We are located at Sanawari village -Arusha.

Otra Cosa Network is a well-established UK Registered Charity and Peruvian registered not for profit (NGO), addressing the educational needs of children and vulnerable adults in an extremely impoverished area of Northern Peru. We work in informal settlements where many community members have been displaced by climate change, disaster and political instability. They live in precarious circumstances, few have running water, sewage provision and there is only sporadic electricity. Additionally, many children are forced to work instead of continuing their education, in order to boost family finances and there are no community-based facilities for learning and developing new skills in a safe environment.
