Oye LENA is an after school teaching project. Every morning we work with kids with a disability, and in the afternoon about 25 toddlers come to join them. Inclusion is really important here.

Oye LENA is an educational project located in Curahuasi, Peru in the heart of the Andes mountain range at an altitude of 2,600 metres. It was founded on 15 April 2012 and has been an officially registered NGO in Peru since 8 February 2013. Oye LENA is short for “Oye Loquitas EN Acción!” which freely translated means: “Listen up, we are taking action!” Oye LENA tries to tackle poverty and social inequality through quality education. Every child has the right to a quality education, focused on personality development, regardless of their own capabilities and limitations and regardless of the place and culture in which they grow up. Children from underprivileged families and ethnic minorities, children with a disability and children in rural areas should have the same opportunities as others.

This is what a regular day looks like at Oye LENA: 08:45 Short reunion 09:00 Pick-up of the special kids at their houses OR free spanish classes 10:00 Individual classes with special kids 12:00 lunch break 12:45 Toddlers arrive. You supervise the playground, toilets and the lunch room 13:50 Circulo 14:10 Classes and toothbrushing 14:35 Watch the kids during their afternoon break 14:50 learning centers 15:35 The kids go to the toilet, eat a banana and two cookies 16:10 the kids go home

Volunteers who stay at least 8 weeks can get a room at the volunteer house of Casa Lena. There are private rooms and shared rooms. A private room costs 11 Euros per night, a shared room costs 9 Euros per night per person. The bathroom, kitchen and living room are shared. The house can accommodate 12 volunteers. If you want to volunteer for a short period you can stay in the Casa Lena B&B. The B&B has three rooms, each with a private bathroom and a shared kitchen and terrace. A room costs 17 Euros per person. We have two rooms with a double bed and one room with two single beds. (Breakfast is optional and costs 5 Euros per person.) The B&B and volunteer house are located next to each other and the project activities take place in the classrooms on the ground floor of both buildings. Additional information
In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents. You need to speak Spanish or be willing to learn it.
