Good day, goodsurfers! I want to share with you my story and to tell you about the way volunteering has influenced my life.
When I was 19, I've moved from country town to the capital and entered the faculty of journalism. Studying in university has opened to me completely different life filling with interesting acquaintances and possibilities I've never thought of. By the end of the first year we had to find a place for internship. Then I thought that student time is the time when you can and you should try as much as possible, do things which your soul tends to, even if it doesn't connect with your future profession.
That is what has influenced to the choice for my first internship. At that time I was a huge fan of the rock band "Okean Elzy" and that is why I've decided to ask for internship in the ice arena where the Ukrainian legend should come soon. At that time the city was preparing to host the World Junior Hockey Championship and organizers were really in needs of helpers. They offered me not to wait for summer internship, but become a volunteer on the Championship in April. I agreed really quickly in spite of the facts that I didn't have any volunteering experience, I've never been interesting in sport and I've never seen hockey live.
After getting some instructions I was assigned to work in press centre because it was directly connected with my future profession. My responsibilities included helping foreign journalists, organization of press center's work and preparation of press conferences. It has to be said, it was very exciting time because during those period I've got a lot of valuable sports relationships which I've used later in the future, I've learned about specificities of organization press centers on sports events, I've met hockey players and fell in love with hockey in general. I enjoyed what I was doing so much that I've started dreaming about work in sport after graduating from the university.
My volunteering activity have been estimated by local Federation of Hockey and after some time they invited me for cooperation again. During my work on large sport events I've realized how important is a good knowledge of language. School made me a person with no desire to learn English, but because of volunteering I found myself in the real situations where the good level of language is required. It made me start searching methodologies of learning language which are suitable exactly for me. I was working really hard for 5 years and now I have my own blog on youtube, where I share the information about learning English and some awesome opportunities abroad.
Good English and my passion to sport volunteering helped me to take the team-host position. It was my secret desire. Even as a press-center volunteer I were really envy to team-hosts, because these very guys spent almost 24 hours with sport teams: they sat on the bents during the matches, they were on a bus and lived in a hotels altogether. I really wanted to be one of them, but this job required a good level of English language.
And finally when I got this height, I was allowed to be a team host for Romanian women's team. What a cool time it was! A lot of problems that you can't predict suddenly arose and you must solve it on the run. All of it makes you the hero in the team's eyes and by the end of the contest you become a part of their sport family: they ask you every single question, put you in every group photo, give you souvenirs and surely do ''high five'' on the way to ice.
Thanks to volunteering I've opened a fount of possibilities for myself and started knocking those doors which were truly interesting to me. During student time I was volunteering at World Hockey Championships, Europe Basketball Championship, Junior Eurovision, Fashion week and much more other events. Volunteering experience not only has changed my point of view on sport, but also has become the determining factor in the choice of future workplace. During another volunteering on the World Hockey Championship 2014, I managed to prove myself and was recommended for work in hockey club "Yunost' Minsk".
I've grown from manager to Head of the media and public relation Department. Recommendation from International Hockey Federation helped me to become one of the twelve lucky from all over the world who were chosen to participate sport educational program on the Universiade in South Korea. That is how all of my experience formed the great portfolio, which led me to my current place of work in the Directorate of 2nd European Games.
I really hope that my story will inspire you. Don't miss the opportunity to act and be fearless in your search!
